On 18 June 2019, Lidl Cyprus announced the completion of its renovated state-of-the-art logistics centre in the Larnaca Industrial Area, at a ceremony attended by the Minister for Energy, Commerce, Industry and Tourism, Georgios Lakkotrypis.

The inauguration was held to mark the completion of the ambitious 28.5 million Euro expansion and upgrading project, which began in 2016, to meet the needs of the consumer public and the increase in the company’s regular product range.

Lidl Cyprus is proud of its project, as this is the largest centre of its kind in the Cypriot retail sector and has huge potential. Specifically, its 20,800 m² area has been increased in capacity by 64%, to 33,393 m². It is an investment of strategic importance which has enabled the company to increase its range by 20% to the benefit of the consumer.

The main goal was to add new products, reaching a total of 2,350 SKUs. The company’s first priority was therefore the expansion of the storage and sorting areas. For nearly 10 years now Lidl Cyprus has consistently and practically adhered to its corporate pledge to work for a better tomorrow, with the environment being the main pillar of its Corporate Responsibility programme.

Since its founding the company has pioneered in the fields of recycling and environmental protection, which is why it has opted to modernize its cold chain before 2030, when it will imposed by law. Its high-tech environmentally-friendly refrigeration facilities, as well as the ultra-modern workplaces absolutely ensure the proper refrigeration of the products at all points of the cold chain, from the logistics centre to all stores.

A new environmentally friendly A/C system and new refrigeration units running on propane R-290 have been installed at the main Lidl Warehouse in Aradippou, where the company’s products are kept in state-of-the-art fridges, at the proper temperature, ensuring their quality and maintaining a stable cold chain at every stage.

At the same time, maintaining the energy management system has the advantage of cost-saving and, in the long term, protecting the environment. The energy management procedures that Lidl Cyprus implements ensure the transparency of all the company’s energy flows and enable us to identify cost-saving possibilities at the stores, in the warehouses, and at the head office. This in turn contributes to enhanced energy performance and by extension to the company’s profitability.

Another result is that this year Lidl Cyprus obtained ISO 50001 certification from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) for its warehouse energy management.

With the completion of the project, 83 local suppliers will deliver fresh produce daily to the logistics centre. The unique organisation, state-of-the-art equipment and exemplary coordination of Lidl personnel mean that every product is delivered in special trucks, on time, and in stable cold conditions, to Lidl stores and customers.

And Lidl Cyprus continues to grow! By the end of 2020 the Lidl family is expected to number 600 associates. Our 10th anniversary is coming up soon and we will be celebrating it with all of you who have embraced Lidl Cyprus from the first with so much warmth and trust.
