Lidl’s success story started in the city of Neckarsulm in the German state Baden-Württemberg. The cornerstone for Lidl’s international expansion was set with a food wholesale company in the 1930s. What has always characterized Lidl’s history is the courage to explore new paths.
Owing to our characteristic business model, our company grew rapidly; and 15 years later 450 stores were active as local suppliers in Germany. By the end of the 1980s, Lidl expanded to other countries. Today we are represented in 32 countries and operate approx. 12.000 stores in 31 of them – and we are still growing: Since 2017 and 2018 Lidl has been also an active player in the US and Serbia.
