Animal welfare

OUR RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE SUSTAINABLE PURCHASE OF ANIMAL PRODUCTS

Numerous own brand products in our assortment contain raw materials of animal origin. Their production is linked to high social expectations regarding animal welfare. Farm animals are sentient beings and we at Lidl are committed to the continuous improvement of their health and well-being. In doing so, Lidl considers aspects relating to health-promoting husbandry conditions, such as access to pasture or outdoor areas, as well as requirements for transport and slaughtering conditions. A high standard of animal welfare not only contributes to the well-being of animals, but also to the quality of our products that come from animal production.

ANIMAL WELFARE STANDARDS

We are committed to increasing national animal welfare standards, promote husbandry conditions and are committed to concrete improvements with our suppliers. This commitment is reflected in our involvement in various initiatives and industry standards. In order to enable our customers to make a conscious purchase decision, we consistently indicate the type of husbandry for fresh meat, eggs and drinking milk. This way, we want to make a long-term contribution to raising animal welfare as such and in the entire industry.

Through the constructive dialog with relevant stakeholders, we try to continuously develop the national animal welfare standards. We are in regular dialog with relevant NGOs and suppliers in order to find overarching solutions that can have a broad impact.

OUR MEASURES FOR MORE ANIMAL WELFARE

The welfare of farm animals is an important part of our international CSR strategy. As an intermediary between our suppliers and our consumers, we can contribute to improvements in the food retail sector. On the part of our customers, our measures also aim to create transparency and raise awareness on animal welfare issues. We can contribute to this, especially through the assortment structure to make purchasing animal products more sustainable.

Further development of standards

Lidl is committed to the further development of animal welfare standards and certification systems.

Use of antibiotics

The preventive use of antibiotics and growth hormones is prohibited by the companies supplying Lidl. We oblige companies to restrict the use of antibiotics, which must be medically justified.

Transport

Lidl obliges its suppliers and partners to keep the routes for animal transport as short as possible and to drive to slaughterhouses close to operations.

Stunning

The animals are reliably stunned before slaughter so that they are unconscious and pain-free.

Vegan assortment

Lidl is continuously expanding its vegan assortment to be able to offer a larger selection of animal-free alternatives.

Certifications

Lidl will make greater use of labels and certifications for animal products in the future and ensure greater transparency and traceability for our customers.

Transparency

We create transparency about the proportion of animal protein sources compared to plant-based protein sources and publish the results annually from fiscal year 2023.
