Lidl Cyprus: Products with improved viability performance packages

Lidl Cyprus is currently introducing the new label “improving & reducing-packaging responsibly”, which informs consumers on the improved viability of the packaging of each product, while respecting transparency principles. The label “improving & reducing-packaging responsibly” on Lidl Cyprus’ private label products indicates that it is a package with improved viability performance over other conventional solutions.

This may imply:

•          At least 80% recyclability

•          Content of recycled materials by at least 30%

•          Use of alternative materials

•          Saving of at least 10% of volume or weight on packaging materials

Where at least one of the above criteria applies, the special labelling shall be secured on the front of the packaging of the product concerned.

On the back or the side of the packaging, or on the inside of the label, a brief explanation of the criteria is obvious. “We want to improve our packaging making them more sustainable. Our customers must be able to easily identify the improved packaging. With the label "improving & reducing-packaging responsibly" we ensure for our customers the appropriate information and transparency”, explains Ioannis Karanatsios, Member of the Board, Purchasing Department, Lidl Cyprus.

The label “improving & reducing-packaging responsibly” confirms Lidl's intention to reduce the use of plastic in private label product packaging and ensures the potential of full recycling of all private label product packaging.

Lidl Cyprus participates in the REset Plastic initiative; the Schwarz Group's strategy on plastic. The group's aim is to reduce plastic usage by 20% by 2025 and to increase the recycling capacity of private label products to 100%. Aside from reducing usage and (re)design of plastic, recycling, remove and research, are also important areas of action.
