Lidl Cyprus is the first to permanently stop selling single-use plastic items
20.12.2019 | Larnaca
Lidl Cyprus is the first organised food retailer in Cyprus to permanently stop selling in its stores as of 31.12.2019 disposable plastic items, such as straws, plates, cutlery and cotton buds with plastic stems.
Lidl Cyprus has pledged to further cut plastics by 20% and to ensure that 100% of its own-brand packaging will be recyclable by 2025.
These measures are part of REset Plastic, the international strategy of the Schwartz group for plastics, in which Lidl Cyprus participates.
The Schwarz Group, which owns the Lidl and Kaufland retail chains and is one of the largest trading companies internationally, recognizes and assumes its environmental responsibility. Under the REset Plastic initiative, it has developed a holistic, international strategy that encompasses five action areas: reduce, (re)design, recycle, remove and research. This reduces the use of plastic and closes the loop thus promoting the circular economy.
The action areas of the REset Plastic initiative are:
REduce
Avoiding the use of plastic wherever sustainably possible
REdesign
(Re)designing products so that they are recyclable and to close the loop thus promoting the circular economy
REcycle
Collecting, sorting, and closing the loop of the raw materials’ life cycles through recycling
REmove
Supporting strategies to free the environment of plastic waste
REsearch
Investing in research, developing innovative solutions and educating about recycling and the protection of natural resources
